BLACK HISTORY MONTH
BASMAH MALIK X LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION
“Growing up working class as a melanated and black woman in the U.K. comes with many challenges and struggles especially with identity construction. Trying to find a balance between opposing cultures from family heritages and western society, you often find yourself torn to live a double life with many things that can be deemed as frowned upon, or even looked down on by different people in society as well as family.
Freedom to express identify almost feels like a privilege and a heavy pressure to hide certain areas of life to approve people’s perception of you. This collection aims to unite & celebrate working class, melanated women’s identity as a whole rather than it constantly feeling the need to ‘split’ or ‘hide’ it to others.” -
